Another image from the top of Craig Coinneach (Kenneth's Crag) in the village of Braemar, this time looking west towards the Cairngorm mountains and up the valley of the river Dee. I think the practice of building a cairn at the top of a hill is a common one, and doesn't need explanation.
This hill was named after Kenneth McAlpin (810-859) King of the Picts, and arguably the first King of Scots.
@gamelee Yes, it's a funny tradition, but I guess it's with a spirit of leaving something behind to mark the 'event' of climbing up the hill. For the days before social media took over that role! ;-)
