Black Dolls by jamibann

Black Dolls

This was taken at an exhibition at La Maison Rouge near Bastille yesterday afternoon - Deborah Neff's collection of black dolls. She apparently has over a thousand in her private collection, although only a selection of these were on display here in Paris. Quite a fascinating exhibition.
This one looks very old

Lovely shot with the background too. We always called them golliwogs and I still have mine too. Wonderful things.

I saw it on tv the other day. the stories behing the dools seem the most interesting part.

@parisouailleurs Yes, and they're beautifully displayed at La Maison Rouge. At the same time there is the art exhibition by Ceija Stojka which is also very interesting.

Fascinating example...the exhibit probably had a lot to say about cultural perspectives and variations across history.

Sounds like an interesting exhibition. My favourite doll used to be a black one - wish I'd kept it!

Strong image! I really like the background you included in the photo. Like Bep, I googled Deborah Neff and this exhibition . . . so interesting to read the background information on her collection. I'm sure attending this exhibition would be an emotional experience for me.

@gaylewood Yes, it was really something. Some of the old photographs of kids with ragdolls were wonderful too.

I wonder what tale it would tell if it could talk.

What a strong image! I'm glad @gaylewood suggested googling the exhibition...it had to be fascinating! I have to confess that looking at this particular doll, I'm reminded of a particularly disturbing passage in Tom Tryon's Children of the Corn... I wish I'd written something sooner and wonder if others thought of that...
