Greyfriars Bobby was a Skye Terrier who became known in 19th-century Edinburgh for spending 14 years guarding the grave of his owner, in Greyfriars Kirkyard, until he died himself in 1872. The story is well known in Scotland through several books and films. This is a commemorative statue of Bobby, which sits outside a pub of the same name.
I've always wanted to see the statue of Bobby, I grew up with my Scottish mother telling me the story. Love the look of the pub and the name of the Row!
@happypat So funny to hear that our mutual friend was in Edinburgh this weekend too! Great minds and all that. I'm going to Braemar on Friday for a tour around the new 5* Fife Arms Hotel - the talk of the town! I can't wait. I just hope they allow me to take some pictures. The decor is amazing from what I've seen on Instagram. Lots of hand painted walls and hand carved wood around. I'm excited about my visit!
@jamibann Sounds a great asset to the area, I have never been to Braemar but once lived in Forres when my dad was stationed at Lossiemouth during the war. We always seemed to keep to the west of Scotland although I have been to Inverness!
@happypat The Fife's certainly been the cause of a lot of talk since it was bought by Swiss Art Dealers, Hauser and Worth. It's been being refurbished for over 2 years! Can't wait to see inside though. Funny that you used to live in Forres - I was born there (although I have no memory of that, we left the area when I was about 2)! Dad was a bobby - firstly stationed in Nairn, where my older brother was born and then in Dallas - where I was born in nearby Forres Hospital. We then moved to Peterhead where younger brother was born, then Braemar, Ballater, Banchory, Bucksburn, Banchory ... We never hung around too long anywhere but dad was always stationed in the north east. He chose to retire to Braemar with his beloved mountains. :-)
