Yesterday's task at our house was a big one ... we had to get some trees taken down as our neighbour has been complaining for years that the roots are damaging the granite stone boundary wall. We really didn't want to do this, as it opens up our back garden and we now overlook a house that we didn't see before. However, it does also open up our view of the hill behind so it's not all negative.
I was fascinated watching the guys removing the trees. A very skilled job. Firstly stripping the branches, working upwards, all the while taking care to leave enough footholds for him to continue upwards. Then working back down and felling the trunk as he goes.
I stood and watched from our bedroom window upstairs, which was the perfect vantage point both for viewing the activity but also for getting some photographs.
They are amazing to watch, aren't they? You could always put something like a beech hedge in to limit the view a little to the other house? We had a neighbour remove a tall Leylandii tree and we are now overlooked into our back garden by 4 houses we couldn't see before! But on the plus side, we get a lot more light.
PS your title always reminds of that joke. "Men at work because when women work, they don't feel the need to put up a sign!"
It's not easy to have trees taken down but having it done by people who know what they are doing makes a huge difference.
Hope you enjoy the new space.....we're still enjoying the difference in our garden.
Great photo.
@casablanca Yes, we will do something to 'fill the gap' but wanted to see how it would look before we decide what to do. It's not as bad as we thought it would be. Next decision is the Douglas Fir. It's right at the back of the garden, but it's massive, and it worries us because if it ever came down in a storm it would not only wreck our house but also probably our neighbours. But, I hate removing all these lovely old trees, so one step at a time!
@jamibann Very wise to do it that way. We had to lose a huge black pine because it was ill and likely to collapse in a storm and damage other people's homes or fall on cars on the main road outside. But we kept all the timber and chopped it up and dried it for firewood! Sometimes needs must. Yes, one step at a time definitely.
Trees are so lovely & it’s a big decision to have to fell them. Unavoidable on your part....would be dreadful if they did damage to property...think of the cost if they fell on someone’s else’s property! We are surrounded by oak trees which do look pretty safe at the moment but would pretty much flatten our house if a wind toppled them. When you think of the years to get to that stage it’s a shame. Trees are very controversial among neighbours! Interesting photos & beautiful fir trees!
