This looks like a mere clump of larch trees on the river's edge. However, hiding underneath the trees is an old pile of stones and a plaque which reads 'Cairn Na Chuimne. Cairn of Remembrance. Ancient rallying point of Clan Farquharson.'. The plaque was erected in 1972, but legend has it that whenever the Clan Farquharson went into battle, each warrior would lay a stone at this place. When he returned, he would take the stone away. In this way they knew how many had been killed in battle. This spot is now the remembrance area for the Farquharson Clan. There is also a new bench there, dedicated to Captain Alwyne Farquharson, The Clan Chieftan, who is now 101 years old. The bench was erected there in honour of his 100th birthday. I've posted an image of the cairn and plaque on my 'odds and sods' album for anyone particularly interested in Clan Farquharson.
I like the thought of life and death being tied together here- those who did not return from battle and the long life of their current chieftan and the bench in his honor. The tree adds to that story too. It seems to me that it was quite moving to be there.
