This gave us great entertainment on Tuesday afternoon. The Co-Op in Cambridge have robots which do grocery deliveries, so we ordered some things and went out to meet the robot coming along the street with our order. It is incredible to watch it drive along the pavement stopping to cross minor roads, avoid objects on the pavements, and wait at pedestrian crossings for someone to press the button before crossing. I don't know how practical it is, but it's certainly amusing to watch, and our groceries arrived! You can even select a tune which plays when you open the box to remove the items. We chose Mr Brightside, by the Killers.
These school kids just kept on walking as the robot passed ... they've obviously seen it all before!
Heading for home today, so a catch up on commenting will be coming soon.
Oh how weird is that.. so what stops someone else intercepting your order..
Great choose of song.. our girl Kylies fave song.. she even meet Bredon Flowers at an Auckland concert.
Such a fun capture! We have these little robots here too and I decided to try one. Sadly their system went down and they cancelled the order. Reluctant to try again.
The wonders and the dangers of technology. It's just incredible how daily life is changing. I wonder if the folk who order the goods have a code or something to open the robot? Otherwise what’s to stop folk on the street from helping themselves.
I was also wondering what is in place to prevent your delivery from being intercepted by someone else. From the size of him I guess there is also a limit on how much you can have delivered.
I haven’t seen one of those yet. Every once in awhile I have to wait for a fleet of Amazon trucks to pass at an intersection. I love how you captured it moving along the sidewalk just like the other pedestrians.
@julzmaioro@Dawn@cocokinetic@merrelyn You have to use the phone app to order. Then, if I remember correctly, when the robot is beside your phone, it sends a message asking you if you are close to your delivery robot. You then slide a bar on your phone to open the box. I think this method of delivering groceries is very limited - both in terms of what you can order and the number of robots that can physically be allowed to 'wander' the streets, but I felt it was a bit of fun more than anything else!
@kjarn We had loads of entertainment tracking it and then walked up to meet it coming to my brother's house, and watch it negotiate the pavements, people and obstacles en route!
Great choose of song.. our girl Kylies fave song.. she even meet Bredon Flowers at an Auckland concert.
Your delivery arrives within that time after ordering. The delivery comes on a motorbike and the riders wear the store colours!
Thanks, Issi! Interesting info.
