I hadn't really thought about my 365 picture today so went into the church in our village.
I am not a religious person, but love going into churches. I love the simplicity of this one. It was built in norman times and is over 800 years old.
These paintings were done in the medieval period but were painted over in Cromwell's time. The church fell into disrepair in the latter half of the 19th century when trees used to grow through the roof and parishoners had to bring umbrellas to the services. Refubishment started around 1916.
This painting is called "the doom" and is above the chancel.
You have great old churches in England. I am not religious either but these places are architecturally and historically fascinating. Thanks for sharing this.
so lovely and interesting... 800 years old... wow! any idea what the painting is that would earn it the title "doom"? i tried looking at it large, but still not quite able to see enough of the subject to really get it...
