colourful crustacean

bit of a cop-out this pic. It is a bit of the ink painting I did at yesterday's art group. I was quite pleased with it but liked it more after I had spent some time this evening putting the black detail onto it. Afraid it's all I have got for today.

Also, in case anybody thinks that they are going mad, some time after posting I realised that I had put the wrong version of it up, so changed it in Picmonkey - only found out recently that you can do that without losing your earlier views and comments.

Had to have the vet out this evening (he is a friend who lives in the village so pops in on his way home from work - no call out charge) to look at Cashew the pygmy goat's eye. It is looking terrible.

It seems that he has an ulcerated cornea (AKA pink eye - tho it doesn't look pink to me - cloudy and white and swollen) in this case probably caused by something getting stuck in it and the scratch becoming infected. One course of treatment is to put cream in several times a day, but as the vet pointed out this would be difficult given how strong he is and how painful his eye is and the fact that I would have to be doing it on my own most of the time. It is also not the most efficient way of delivering the medicine because his tears wash the cream out. So in this case the vet asked me if I was squeamish because he needed me to hold the goat very still while he injected the drugs into the eye - more specifically the membrane lining the eyelids and the eyesocket. This way the drug would be slowly released onto the surface of the eyeball. Of course I said 'Oh, I will be fine' and got into goat restraining pose - obviously it was important that he could not move which was not easy given how strong he is and how much it must have hurt. I must say, tho I didn't let it show, the sight of an injection going into an eye was pretty disturbing to say the least, and the image of it will remain with me for some time. Poor little chap.

Trouble is there is no guarantee of this working and so we have got to give him a call if it isn't looking any better by the weekend to discuss our other options (from what I have managed to find out this means either stitching his eyelids closed so it can remain lubricated while healing, or removing the eyeball, which both sound a bit grim.

If you are still reading this, i.e. haven't passed out, or vomited - well done!

Oh yes, and one of the pigs has been limping since returning from its extended sleepover.........
Pretty painting. Hope the goal will be ok. Sounds nasty.

Poor Cashew - sounds hideous. You did well - not sure I could have managed that with the eye. It's almost more than I can cope with proffering L's thighs to well-meaning needle wielders.

I love your lobster - not surprised you were pleased with it

You are very brave, don't miss a photo op with the eye when it is less disgusting. One of my favorite cat photos is one where his eye was all puffy from a fight.

Great artwork!

Poor little Cashew - I sincerely hope that his eye will soon recover without any further drastic treatment -- eyes are so delicate to play about with ! whatever I hope his eye can be saved --Pigmies have such prominent & beautiful eyes I always think !! now your work of Art I love the detail one gets with ink painting & also the clarity of colour This is lovely & you should be proud of it & the photo of the painting

First, what a wonderful piece of artwork!
I'm impressed you were able to hold poor Cashew down....Next time you'll have to look the other way. Hope the medicine takes!!!!

@beryl Thanks Beryl. I can't wait to have another go. It is the clarity and vibrance that I loved, and I can now see how to make more of that next time - it's years since I have used inks and it is such a learning curve isn't it.

wonderful shot

What a fantastic painting. The inking is spot on!
Your poor little Cashew - sounds very painful. Hope it mends without the vet having to do anything radical.

Beautiful painting.
April 18th, 2013
Wow... Fab painting. You are obviously multi talented!
April 18th, 2013
Not only poor Cashew, but poor Jan! I know how hard and gross it is to do things like that. You did well, and Cashew will appreciate it!
We are always checking the eyes on our sheep and lambs. Sheep and goats both tend to get things in their eyes because of the way their eyelids close. (Sideways and not up and down like ours).
I am sure he will be okay,
You are so talented, both with camera and ink! Beautiful picture of your artwork.

Poor Cashew, hope that his eye heals up very soon.
On a brighter note - A really lovely picture of a picture (so to speak) :)
April 18th, 2013
I'm very impressed with the lobster. You're obviously multi-talented. Poor Cashew. I hope the injection works and you don't have to consider either of the alternative options.
April 18th, 2013
Well firstly this is a magnificant piece of art work - pen and ink, it is wonderful. You are very talented. Now to the goat, oooohh poor little thing but well done you for being brave. Fingers crossed the drug will do the trick - it is such a worry when animals are poorly - it dominates your thoughts. Keep us posted.

Love the art. Great colors! And poor Cashew. You did a good job holding him still. ;) I hope his eye heals quickly and that the piggly wiggly's leg is better soon. :)

I did make it to the end of your spiel, but I feel a bit sick now. The painting, however, is beautiful! No end to your talents: photographer, artist, goat wrestler....
April 18th, 2013
I am amazed at the artwork! So colorful and beautiful work. Never had to wrestle a goat with sore eye but on occasion have had to deal with pinkeye in our cattle, One of the accepted remedies seems awful-- puffing a dry powder antibiotic or sulfa powder of some kind into the open eye. Can imagine how awful that must be for the critter being treated, which already has a painful, sore eye. If simply left alone the eye clouds over, but seems to cause no severe problems.

First you are quite an artist Jan to go with your farmer talents....i don't know how you find the time as well as look after the family....bet you don't watch much TV! Poor little Cashew & you are a brave woman but needs must!!!!!!! I was a nurse before I married & always said farming is just the same as nursing only with animals!
April 18th, 2013
Wow - you're very gifted. Love this. So sorry to hear about poor Cashew - I hope this treatment works for him x x
April 18th, 2013
You are very talented! Wonderful painting. Hope that Cashew gets better so that you don't have to go for the next options.
April 18th, 2013
What a creative person you are! Love the ink drawing and love the photo too
April 18th, 2013
Cool painting. Oh, poor little Cashew! I hope the injection works! Must be great having a vet living close by saving a call-out fee.
April 18th, 2013
aww, poor cashew! Hope he heals quickly - wouldn't want to go through that treatment!
April 18th, 2013
Really good painting-so much detail. Hope Cashew gets better real soon.
April 19th, 2013
This is a super painting, well done! I hope Cashew is soon better without needing those other potential treatments. I had an injection on the inside of my eyelid years ago as I do suffer eye trouble from time to time, but it wasn't nearly as bad as I imagined it would be.
April 19th, 2013
Fab stuff - you could get GCSE A* with this in the 'beasties' category!
April 19th, 2013
Oh I've just read to the end - eeeuwww - cleaning Monty's ears out is positively a treat in comparison. Oh and poor pig - a bit much when sex makes you limp...
April 19th, 2013
you are fabulously artistic... this is gorgeous!
April 20th, 2013
Obviously your talents extend beyond the camera lens. :-)

Poor little Cashew! What an ordeal for him to go through.
And you too...although I, myself, wouldn't have LOOKED at the injection process. Yikes! I really hope the injection worked, hate to see an animal in distress.
