Headed out to Boddington reservoir because the sky was looking promising this evening.
Apart from a couple of dog walkers and a group of drunken (and frankly a bit scary) yoofs, there was nobody around and most of the time I was totally alone there. The silence (I am selectively ignoring the noise from a nearby road) was broken every few seconds by loud plopping sounds. These were made by enormous fish (pretty sure they were carp) jumping straight up out of the water all over the lake. It was quite a spectacle, a bit like a scaled-down version of a dolphin show really. I suspect that it was something to do with their spawning behaviour and memories of when Graham and I first lived together came back. Our front door was about ten feet away from a river bank and at this time of year we were kept awake by carp flapping about in the reeds by our house when they laid their eggs. A right old racket they made, and along with the gang-banging mallards this meant that at this time of year sleep didn't come easily. Explaining to people that the sex lives of fish and ducks was the reason for you looking so tired always raised a few eyebrows.
Loved the story of fish and ducks doing the wild thing. I'm considering using that as an excuse the next time I have to explain why I'm sleep deprived. ;-)
