Completely foul morning and early afternoon weather-wise. I cleaned the cooker - one of my most hated jobs and took Angus to Stratford for his English Language exam this afternoon.
As a reward to myself and in protest at the rubbishy weather I went to spend an hour in in the humid steaminess of the butterfly farm. Lucked out again because there were no school groups there. Love the little darlings, but excitable children, narrow walkways and tripods just don't mix. There were a couple of lovely families with toddlers and I offered to take some pics of them with their cameras so they didn't have to do the turn-taking thing thing where they never all appear in the same shot. Love doing that.
While I was there quietly going about my business a man came in with ALL the gear. Massive lenses and things attached to his camera that I didn't even recognise. I smiled in what I considered to be a friendly but unassuming manner and scuttled off to bumble about with my tripod and cable release in a less conspicuous place. At one point he was doing his highly competent-looking photographer thing nearby and somebody nodded at me and said to him in a very pleasant way 'do you swap notes?' to which Professor Gadget repsponded in sneering tones, with no attempt at making them inaudible to me "I try not to."
I was so shocked and my thoughts immediately turned to this community where people are so friendly and generous with their knowledge. Miserable sod. Anyway, when I was on my way out I realised that he was the person who had taken the photos that are displayed in the foyer so of course I had a look at his website when I got home............
Angus' English Language exam was 'alright' apparently.
Lovely macro love the colours, lovely shot!
There is always someone who who lacks a little modesty, hope he didn't spoil your enjoyment of your visit :)
@craftymeg Thanks Margaret, to be honest it did make me feel a bit yuck at the time, but after looking at his website I realised that his work would be considered only a little better than average compared to a lot of the stuff on here.
Lets hope is is not a 365er (check tag butterfly for today!!). Cheeky bigger!! This photo is incredible Jan, the detail is just amazing. I think he should have swapped notes I bet your is better than his ... Nair niddily nair nair!!
@judithg Good luck to Adam with the physics. That's a week on Friday for Angus. RS and Spanish this Friday. There are still weeks of this left. My liver is beginning to scream for mercy!
Wow, that's amazing detail! Fabulous shot and it's a shame your pleasure was spoiled by Mr Nerd with the large equipment, but I bet he couldn't do better than this!
Fab shot GREAT CLARITY & DETAIL --glad you didn't trip in Mr Pompous- Nasty's big equipment ( that sounds rather rude doesn't it !! ))on your way out !! hehehe !! An instant Fav for me
This is amazing, down the the droplets on its proboscis.
I can't believe the way that man behaved. I normally find fellow photographers a friendly lot - I think he realised you are serious competition to him!!! (You could have wafted by to disturb all the butterflies in front of him... I'd have been tempted!)
Fav,i have found so far other photographers have been friendly.Mind you have had run ins as a horse photographer with others who thought they had exclusive rights, but i always check with the show committee first,to check my rights!
This is a stunner Jan! Just love it and have to Fav it. We have a butterfly house at our zoo but I find it difficult to take photos there- it's WAY too popular!
Photographer snobs, who needs them. Too bad you couldn't of just waved this little dandy at him! ;)
Stunning shot, love how you got the droplets on it's proboscis (?).
Loved the back story, what an ass, as we all know, big does not mean best!
Your shot is fab btw, I'm have been thinking about hiring a macro lens, and this pic just reminds me why.
Wowsers!! The clarity is super stunning. Instant fav. Sounds like the guy was a complete Dick. Not worth wasting your breath on and frankly I suspect I wouldn't like his work at all. You create art, pure and simple. He probs just takes photos xx
What a rude man!
Glad the exam was 'alright' ~ I believe that is a good thing :-)

Photo man sounds like a right charmer. My guess would be that his massive lens is seriously compensating for something...

And to the photo-snob....Boooo! Hisss! What a jerk.
