white plume moth by jantan

white plume moth

much better viewed large

this moth was disturbed from its hiding place in some plants in our garden. It very considerately landed on the house wall so I could take a photo of it. Well, about 30 photos to be more precise because the wind wasn't being quite so considerate and it was very breezy making getting a sharp image quite difficult. It's wing-span is about one inch (25mm).

I am still a little bit worried about Joey Boy the donkey and when I tried to put more purple spray on his insect bites today he waved one of his back around in a perfunctory manner in the direction of the spray can. Now, by Joey's standards a perfunctory waving around of a leg is the equivalent of a full-blown 'I'm really pissed off' double-barreled kick in most, less passive donks. He really doesn't like it.

The ailing chicken is still ailing - not looking very hopeful for that one I'd say.

I have been in pretty full-blown 'children's taxi driver' mode today, with both boys requiring various amounts of ferrying about. While I was on one of those jaunts I had received a call from home. For some reason my iPhone is very temperamental when it comes to linking up with the hands free in my or Graham's cars so I had to stop and call him back. He had received a panicked call for me from a friend of mine because her cats had brought in a bird (a jay) which she found dying in her kitchen sink. I seem to have developed something of an, (unwanted) reputation for being a nurser or 'dispatcher' of half-dead birds, but Angus dutifully went and collected it and the reason he was calling was to find out how to put it out of its misery. By the time I had found somewhere to pull over and call him back he had already called Graham who gave him the necessary instructions while standing on a crowded underground platform in London. I wouldn't be surprised to find a CCTV picture of him on Crimewatch next week....... "Do you know this man? He was overheard giving instructions.............etc etc.."

Anyway, I was quite proud of Angus. A horrible, horrible thing to have to do, and he could easily have left it to suffer longer until I got home, but did the job himself.

My last ferrying job of the evening was to pick Angus up from Leamington where he and some friends had gone to the cinema. On the way home he told me that one of the friends wasn't there because he had to be with his Mum who is in a hospice in the last stages of terminal cancer. I can't tell you how disturbed I was by this news, especially when Angus told me that his friend has only ever referred to it twice and the only people he has told are Angus and one other friend. It really does make you count your blessings.

Three good things:

Health

Brave children

Family

wow, how unusual!

Plume -so well named and a beautiful shot.

Well your 30 shots make my 12 of the Town Hall look a bit tame! A really good shot of this unusual moth, very pretty. You definitely do have a good reputation of being a carer, to everybody it seems. It seems Angus follows you in this if his friend has only told him and one other friend about his mum and this is surely very good that the friend felt able to do this.

Oh, it's been a hard day! Thank you for sharing it with us! I expect we have all had similar experiences and its nice to know what to say! The most difficult put down I had to deal with was a wild cat that had got inside! In spite of heavy gloves, John got wounded but still had to complete the mission and the ruddy cat wouldn't die! We also cared for some baby swallows for about 3 months but they all died because we couldn't teach them how to groom! Life is rich with experiences!

What an unusual moth ! Good shot !

What a stunning moth - such skeletal feathery wings! If you were running about all day I don't suppose you heard that programme on R4 about the artist (can't remember her name) who makes dark, sinister little fairies out of old bones and insect wings and things? Anyway this image immediately made me think of it.

I've never actually had to put anything down - I hope I could if it came to it, but I'm not sure. It is brave - well done Angus.

Very unusual moth, worth the effort.

Amazing capture Jan and well worth all of your efforts... a fav for me.... I have never seen one as close up as that... it really is quite beautiful...
So sorry to hear Joey Boy is having a rough time... bless his heart... I do hope he improves very soon. Also sorry to hear about the chicken.... its not easy when animals/pets are ill.....
Missed you heaps and good to be back... trying to catch up with everyone as quickly as possible. Lots going on... life in general, recent dental surgery where I had to have part of my gum removed.... long story but I never want to go through it again... I looked like I had been in a boxing match and losing badly..... Anyway... back to normal now ( if you can call anything about my life normal... lol!!) Nice catching up with your gorgeous shots and diary write ups.... x♥x

That is one hard day on the emotional front. I am afraid Angus is learning a few hard lessons but well done to him.

Great shot. I have not seen this before.

Health, brave children and family, how right you are. Feel all choked thinking of a teenager losing his mother. I didn't used to think much about it until I had children myself and now I am somewhat of a hypochondriac! Saying that, children are amazingly resilient and take it in their stride.
Now your moth, what a beauty, almost like a spirit. I have never seen anything as interesting around here. Have a good weekend.

Very interesting looking creature! Your story is tough and reflects how difficult life can be for everyone, especially for kids. Health and quality of life are many times taken for granted. Sounds like Angus is learning that life is precious and many things are not always as they initially appear.

A rather ghostly little moth & rather pretty.
A day you won't forget in a hurry & a day Angus won't forget either...a lot to take for a young man that...putting bird out of it's misery & then being responsible & sympathetic enough for his friend to feel he can confide in...brave boy indeed! He will have grown up a lot today!! Give him an extra helping!!

Never seen one of these before, quite strange!

Gosh I've never seen anything like this - amazing shot. So sorry to hear about Angus's friends mother. Children can be so brave and also he was good to put the little bird out of it's misery. You are right about the 3 good things. Where would we be without any of them?

Lovely moth...you managed a great shot. Life has hard lessons...Angus is learning many and this helps us grow...no one ever said life is fair...Bless him for being able to listen to his friend and help him.
Truest 3 GT you have listed.

Stunning shot, never seen anything like it! What a difficult you're all having! Hugs

Strange looking thing with angelic wings. I'm sure your son was some comfort to his friend, poor boy. Losing Mum at such a young age is a difficult thing to discuss with anyone xx

Ghostly looking moth, never seen one before.

This is such an amazing creature. It's new to me! Thanks so much for posting!

What a pretty moth - his name fits him perfectly. The wings do look like feathers.
Thanks for your stories - you have me chuckling and then crying right after.
Give Angus another hug from us all, and tell him we are all thinking of him. He is growing up fast!

Lovely shot.

Fabulous moth - never seen one. Angus has done well bless him - it puts exam nonsense in perspective doesn't it. One of Rachel's friends lost her mum on New Year's Day when they were in year 8. She was immensely brave and has always been cheerful whenever I've seen her since. Some kids are very resilient. Somehow older can be worse though. I'm sure Angus will be a great help to him.
July 6th, 2013
Wow that's amazing. Well captured.
July 7th, 2013
Holy moly this is cool.
July 10th, 2013
Oh dear, what a day for your family and surrounding loved ones. Angus has had to deal with some heavy issues. Good he has you there to help him cope. I hope his friend has a strong support system also. No child should have to see a parent die. That should be for much later years, but damn...things happen. I'm glad the boy feels he can confide in your son. That's a good message right there.

This photo: I'm glad you stated its size, because to me it looks as big as a BIRD. What an amazing creature. Such interesting feathery wings it has.
Fascinating.
And Fav.
