I spotted the donks looking hopefully over the gate when they heard me approach. I really liked the way the low light from behind caught their ears.
I have not been on here very much recently because I have been having some problems with my neck. Anyway, to cut a long story short I got my MRI results today and I have a slipped disc which due to the fact that I am experiencing increasing levels of nerve damage in the thumb and forefinger of my right hand is going to require surgery, probably some time in the next couple of weeks.
That should make life interesting with animals to look after and two children at schools in two different towns with no bus service to the village and a husband who works 70 miles away in the opposite direction and leaves the house at 6am each day. I have had lots of offers of help from people in the village and I guess I am going to have to go against the grain and accept some of it - not my style at all! My Mum seems to be itching for the opportunity 'to look after me' too. I may be 50 and her 74, but that maternal instinct never wanes does it?
Hopefully I will get the feeling back in my thumb and forefinger because it is such a nuisance not being able to write or draw or feel the controls on my camera.
Oh no - I feel for you - my neck is also bad and they are waiting for nerve damage before they can do anything....! Hang in there!!! This is a fabulous capture! I love donkeys!
Oh no what a nuisance still your health comes first and everything just has to slot in. Perhaps it you will have your op in school holidays and then you will have no school runs and two helpers to do the animals and pamper their mum! So feel for you. This ear shot is fab and a fav from me.
Oh flipping heck Jan! I'll get Monty on the phone to you - he can tell you all about it. Actually if he's anything to go by the first few days involved lots of painkillers and REST. VERY important (note capital letters) to get the muscle strength back before doing too much. So you'd better get accepting that help! Can the boys stay with friends or board for a few days? Good idea from @lucypics though - ours break up in 3 weeks. You'll feel an awful lot better without that disc on you nerves though.
Such beautiful soft ears! Such a 'pain' about the op but do accept all the help offered. It must be very frustrating for you now so I hope it all goes really well. Sending good vibes, Jan.
@lucypics@judithg Thanks for the good wishes! I was thinking about waiting until the holidays, but mine are a bit later than Adam's and I am really worried about the nerve damage to my fingers because I keep hearing that the longer they are impinged upon the greater the chance that they wont fully recover. I must admit I did think of Monty's op earlier this afternoon. I think it is probably the same thing. No more hooping for me then I suppose - dammit!
I'm not exactly sure when I will have it done because the surgeon I have been to is retiring from private practice because (unfortunately for me) he has just been elected as president of the British Society of Neurosurgeons and he is going to refer me to a colleague. So I think I should be in good hands.
Ooh !! Jan , poor you -I am so sorry --I know how difficult it is to accept help but there are times you must forget your independence and be prepared to accept help ! Hope you will not have to wait too long for the op !!- meanwhile take care ! Love the Donks ears photo -- but I miss seeing their eyes !!
Such good advice from all the above ........just think of yourself & believe that people want to help you....nothing us mums like better than getting stuck in & being needed, don't deprive your mum of that! Do hope all gets back to normal again soon. Can't imagine who is going to mind the donks though ...if I were nearer I would come over myself & make sure they have water etc etc . More to animal minding than you think!
Love your ear photo by the way.
You must be relieved that your problem has a good outcome & a proper result. Nothing worse than some vague diagnosis that they don't know how to treat!
I like the light and the repeating shapes here. Good luck for your surgery and you need to accept all offers of help (I'm no good at that either). I recently had carpal tunnel surgery, which is very minor but it's taken me longer to recover than I expected, so I sympathise with you.
Oh dear Jan, I didn't realise you were having such trouble. What a pain! I guess you'll muddle through with the help you are going to have to accept. Not nice is it. I'm very I dependant too. Like to do it all myself! Get well soon. Love the light on the Donks ears.
I love the shot and lighting. A 4 eared donkey….. Good luck with your surgery - I think us females are the worst at just accepting offers of help - put yourself in their shoes - I imagine you'd be first to offer help to others. So, for now, although difficult, say 'yes please' for all the help that is offered. You will have a chance to 'pay it forward' later.
@jewelsandbinoculars Thanks. The boys have been great actually. Angus has been off on study leave for the past month so has been sorting the animals out for me which is a great help. He's back at school on Tuesday so Graham is going to be feeding the pigs before he leaves for work at 6am.
My husband had a similar operation a couple of months ago and we went out to lunch with family the very next day. He was doing everything but heavy lifting within a couple of days. Is back playing golf. He was driving short distances very shortly after. Hopefully it won 't be as bad as you imagine . Love those donk ears.
@lwain thanks so much for that info Lindy. I have been looking online to try to get an impression of what to expect after the op. I suppose that most of the people who document their recovery are those who don't have particularly good ones, because some of the stories are not very comforting!
@jantan I think you're right about leaving it - the vet said Monty would have been becoming paralysed and there's a lot more physio and a poorer outcome in that case. Of course no way of know if his fingers were numb although he did object hugely to the vet touching his feet so may be they were tingly. Also you don't want the 'sudden crisis' they kept telling me about in which the disc prolapses - I hope you're not lugging bales about. It's summer and the evening are light so I'm sure neighbours will enjoy a bit of donkey care for a while.
Donks!!! I can't get enough of those ears. Just want to reach in and scritch their owners!
My mom and her twin sister (age 70) both had similar surgery on their necks. Both are back to full activity and are sorry they didn't have the surgery earlier. Thinking good thoughts for you!!
Lovely fluffy ears, beautifully lit. Sorry to hear about your health problems, I'm very independent too so hate it when my RA flares up and I can't do everything I need to do. My advice is accept the help, it's better than worrying about things not getting done. Who knows you may be returning the favours at some point in the future. Good luck with it all Jan.
