This is my Mum's dog Wes. We always had at least one dog when I was growing up, and to this day I cannot imagine living in a household without one. They were always quite large dogs or smaller working-type dogs. In other words, nothing like Wes.
At the time my dad died about two and a half years ago, he and my Mum had a lovely cocker spaniel called Bertie. He was always very much my Mum's dog and they adored each other.
Bertie was already quite old, had one eye, was stone deaf and could hardly walk. So my brother and I were desperate for him to keep going for a bit longer because we could not imagine how my Mum would respond if she lost him too.
Well, dear old Bertie kept going for another eighteen months thank goodness.
We knew that my Mum needed another dog in her life, so I researched smaller breeds that were good companions and didn't have great exercise requirements. The breed that fitted the criteria best was a Shih Tzu.
Enter stage right 'Wes.' A small dog, with a big attitude. Definitely not our normal cup of tea, but he is the perfect portable companion for my Mum. He is desperately in need of a haircut at the moment because his groomer has been recovering from Covid. I clip our dogs, and did try to do him in the first lockdown. He was a complete nightmare so I am pleased that the groomer is going to be working again from February.
My Dad was a jazz guitarist and Wes is named after the jazz musician Wes Montgomery who was one of his favourites. His track 'Round Midnight' was the entry music at his funeral. It is a beautiful piece.
Very cool music, proper jazz. What you would play in the background while entertaining! Wes is a cutie! I know what you mean about little dogs...farm dogs & Labrador type dogs seem sensible but if you asked Harry about a Shih Tzu he would have po pooed but knows better now. The ideal dog for an older person which we are!
@happypat haha, I know Pat. We are always laughing about what my Dad would have thought of him. But really we know that he would just have wanted my Mum to be happy.
That is a wonderful piece of music, Jan! No wonder it was your father's favourite piece.
Wes appears to fit the music perfectly, spunky and full of surprises!
Firstly- well done Bertie and now well done Wes! I’ve been glued to Pooch Perfect despite Nigel’s eye rolling. Since I made a right hash of Monty (couldn’t get the clippers up his legs!) I’ve got extra respect!
