Ooh I've been in a right old grump today. Water pipes to the animals all frozen so I had to lug big cannisters of hot water up to them all to defrost their drinking troughs......... twice.
George DoVLB (dog of very little brain) managed to find the only bit of unfrozen ground in the whole of Oxfordshire and proceeded to liberally apply the sloppy mud to his whole head and body. But he does that every day doesn't he? I hear you say...... well, yes, but it's not every day that all of the outside taps are frozen solid, so I ended up having to wash him in the kitchen using an old flannel......soul destroying.
Today's shot is the dinner I made using more of the 'Just Caught' fish that was delivered recently. To me the potatoes looked the most appealing part of the plate..... a true symptom of dieting and not having eaten a single potato this year. It's poached skate wing with a sauce vierge, which is basically a warm vinaigrette with red onion, tomatoes and capers. We saw Rick Stein doing something similar in TV last night.
Ooh Jan , not the best of days then ,but you crease me with your descriptive monologue ! Ha , but you love old George don't you !!Looks a delightful meal - enjoy , those roasties really jump at me especially as I am so desperately trying to cut down on carbohydrates and fat ! ( I won't exactly call it dieting !! )
That looks extremely delicious. I sympathize about the freezing. We're having record low temperatures too, but the only thing I have to defrost is the hummingbird feeder.
A very colourful & tempting dish...you look like you are a versatile & imaginative cook. One of my TGT yesterday was that I hadn’t to go round with kettles of water defrosting water bowls & pipes....a thankless task but vital in this weather. One Christmas Day it took us almost all morning to defrost 120 cows & calves in pens...a long nightmare day but we were younger them & it’s what you do! Hope it warms up....
That meal looks delicious, healthy and filling (hard to get that balance) I so sympathise with you about the frozen water and mud. The only good thing about the freezing cold temperatures is the sold ground and lack of mud so for George to find some must have been soul destroying. More cold, more wet, more stinking dog and more towels to dry. Feel your pain
@debgasc the trouble here in the UK is that wpe have this sort of weather so rarely that we just aren't geared up for it at all. The rest of the world must think we are a joke the way we moan about a few cm of snow 😁
@happypat not the best of Christmas days then Pat, but a great sense of achievement I bet. Although we are on a minute scale compared to the farmers, I do like the feeling of satisfaction knowing that all of the animals are fed and watered and cleaned out.
@lucycameron thanks Lucy. The potatoes don't look particularly healthy but they are sauteed in a bit of spray oil. Clean(er) dogs is definitely the plus side of the frozen ground. I would love to get George one of those all over suits like you got Sasken. Trouble is if we put anything remotely resembling clothing on him he is absolutely terrified and completely freezes. He's such a lummox..... 🙂
Looks delish & at least you have the willpower- my diet going nowhere... Sympathies on the pipes - it was bad enough taking a kettle out to the hens when we had them.
