On the Babes on Bikes ride to Bethesda, we stopped several times to look at the flooding Potomac River. This is near Haines Point. We took a short break and watched vehicles going through the flood under this bridge. Some cars and bicyclists turned around. Some took the mostly dry sidewalk on the other side. We were impressed by this cyclist who plowed right through the water, catching up to the tour bus ahead of him. I was wishing for my SLR camera with a longer lens, but settled for my pocket camera.
I remembered when I drove my VW Rabbit through a similar pool of water back in the early 1980s. I hesitated a long time, but decided to give it a try since every other car was going through and there didn't seem to be anywhere else to go on 395. Big mistake! My tailpipe was lower than other cars', and it sucked in water instead of air. Since the car was only a few years' old, I had the engine rebuilt instead of declaring it totalled.
I almost chased down a low-profile vehicle and told them to turn around, but they made that wise decision on their own.
