Holgate alms houses

Tucked away in a peaceful location between the villages of Hemsworth and South Hiendley on the borders of South & West Yorkshire, the Archbishop Holgate Almshouses and Chapel of the Holy Cross form one of the most tranquil and architecturally magnificent almshouse developments in England.
It was built with money left by Robert Holgate, a controversial figure who served as Archbishop of York from 1545 until he was imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1553 for breaking his vow of celibacy.
Holgate also founded grammar schools in Hemsworth, Malton and York.
He left instructions for the almshouse to provide for 10 poor men and 10 poor women, all of th eold, and the original buildings are thought to have been in the centre of Hemsworth next to the market place. The present development, which was built in 1860, is set in 13 acres of woods and garden and has 24 terraced cottages for people aged 60 or over.

I went past this twice daily to grammar school in Hemsworth for many years. The bluebell wood is wonderful in spring. It was only a few years ago that I learnt the story of the Archbishop's benevolence. Needless to say the school I attended is not in the original building, I don't know where that was or the almshouses.
I shall never see these beautiful buildings in Yorkshire's West Riding again
