Normally I'll see 4 or 5 Chimney Sweeper moths on Walmgate Stray, York. Sunday I saw 23, Monday 26, today an incredible 166 including a mating pair. Other recorders have reported much higher numbers than usual too.
They are tiny, less than an inch across, fly rapidly and very low in long grasses, almost impossible to get good shots.
I saw all these just walking along the many paths walkers have created across the 67 acres, but only in the 1/3 nearest my home which is their preferred area.
