The jewel in York's crown

Tansy Beetle, Fulford Ings.
Victorian ladies thought the wing cases would make beautiful sequins...
Needless to say populations plummeted and only a short stretch of the river Ouse now supports this precious insect.
TBAG, Tansy beetle action group has been working hard for many years to increase numbers and sites and I believe some are now on the Fens after relocation.
St Nicks Fields is also working to improve habitat, planting Tansy and in time more insects will hopefully be relocated, as were those I saw today, 5 couples and at least 5 singletons.
The Beetle is a bit brainless, gets lost 200 yds from home. Should be able to fly but doesn't.

A lovely shot of this very rare beetle - fav! Aparently planting of tansy plants has been undertaken to ensure the tansy beetle can move more easily along the banks of the river. There is also a rather nice mural of the tansy beetle on the upper part of a house in Queen Street - well worth a look if you are near the railway station.

@fishers Museum Gardens has a colony behind the gardenersā€™ shed. The mural is brilliant, I remember its unveiling. The primary site is at Clifton, hopefully the new flood defences didnā€™t impact too much. Iā€™ve been told there is a relocated colony close to where the ice cream boat moors near Millennium Bridge . Will check next walkies.
