Beadwork is very common in this part of Alaska. I think it goes back to the Russian influence. They call these hair clips "hair pretties" and I have quite a collection of my own! Today we had a large contingent of visiting elders from many villages for a special Inupiaq Conference right here in our tiny village! We are feasting on caribou and other native traditional foods, like beaver, bear, sheefish, & sage grouse.
Makes me wish I had longer hair! Your stories are so much more interesting than mine -- especially since the highlight of my day was finding a student's testing booklet that I'd been looking for for two days. Since I didn't have to call our testing coordinator to fess up, I rewarded myself with a trip to the candy store.
@sitiodown@wiesnerbeth LOL, Beth! I've been teaching for 32 years and never had stories like this that I've experienced up here. It really is another world. (I'd have rewarded myself, too, if I'd found a missing test - yikes!!)
@yeri87@cruiser@mbemis Thanks so much for your kind words, everyone. Your response to my everyday life has helped me develop a new eye toward the simple world around me.
You have such an amazing and incredible life. This is so clear in your photos...and you are surely a born teacher...I'm going to follow you so I too can share in the joy and discoveries you share here with us!
