I often go to cemeteries while travelling, and this one was amazing. Cemitério do Alto de São João was created in 1833 to accommodate deaths from a cholera epidemic in Lisbon. It consists of street after street of family mausoleums, with the occasional "regular" headstone mixed in, a World War I mausoleum and a cenotaph to the victims of the 1910 Revolution. Most mausoleums were sized to fit 6 caskets, arranged 3-aside within (bunk bed style). Not all of the mausoleums had transparent doors, but many of them did. There is another apparently amazing cemetery on the other side of the city, but it was closed by the time I got there.
I'm currently situated in Victoria, having previously lived in Beijing, Halifax, Chilliwack, Calgary, Vancouver and growing up in Northwestern Ontario. My aim with photography is...
I love visiting cemeteries too!
This is such a cool shot, so many stories in the one picture. fab POV. the tree in the middle of the "street" really made me stop and realise it was not a normal city street
