For Get Pushed 515 my partner, Kali, asked me to do a photo in a vanitas still life in the style of Pieter Claesz. A vanitas is a symbolic work of art showing the transience of life, the futility of pleasure, and the certainty of death.
Here I have chosen the Bible which speaks of life and the future, the pocket watch to symbolize the passage of time, the Welsh miner's lamp to represent changes in work, the pen and ink to remind us of history and its loss over time, the dombra to represent the changes in every day customs, the eyeglasses to symbolize aging, and the whiskey glass to represent the futility of many pleasures.
Pieter Claesz also worked in monochromes, so I chose to try and emulate this by the dark backgrounds.
The newest item used here is the carving of the dombra at about 25 years, and the oldest is the Bible at 125 years.
Excellent! I really like the items you chose , they are meaningful. And nice subdued lighting. One suggestion i would have is perhaps to work the angles a bit or prop up the props to show the ink bottle and watch off a bit more , but well done indeed.
