In the presence of history

My third day in Rome. We went to see the Forum Romanum and the Capitoline Hill Museums.

At the Forum Romanum I was almost moved to tears, as I thought about all the history that has happened right there. I was walking in the footsteps of emperors!
Even Asterix and Obelix were there... :) One can only imagine how the place was in it's glory.

Love the simplicity of this shot. Just to think you probably walked whee Caesar did-wow!! All we gave you was where Kings and Queens of England walked.

@janim If time travel existed, I would definitely go and see how these places looked like in their golden days. It must've been awe-inspiring.
@padlock Kings and Queens of England are not any less impressive! I have also been totally moved by the Traitor's Gate in Tower. But yes, I have walked where Julius Caesar and Augustus walked - and waited for a bus where Julius Caesar was murdered! Imagine that!

Looks so good against the blue sky. I have many like these from Greece, it´s always so owerhelming when you visit all the historical places. For me I think the most impressive was the Olympic stadion in Peleponnesos, to think that I was there where the very first olympic games were held and invented or in England, I when I visited the Hever castle and the Towers as I always have been very fascinated by the story of Anne Boleyn. And you don´t always have to go so far back the history to get moved, while lying at the beach in Phuket, I could not help to think all the horrors that has taken place, right there where I lay people have died cos of the 2006 tsunami

Oh I must take that back, I don´t know how I forgot but it was so many years ago and I´ve travelled a lot since then. But yeah, the most effective place I´ve visited has to be the Auswitch, my God that place! For a very sensitive person as me, it was quite a dramatic experence!

@susale For a historian like myself, it's always great to visit places that really have the power to make me feel something "extra", or the "presence of history", as I like to call it. Whether it be thousands of years in the past or just a few. I haven't visited Auschwitz myself, but experienced something similar in Sachsenhausen, near Berlin. Bone chilling stories, horrible events. (And I've got to say that visiting the Tower and seeing Traitor's Gate was one of those "whoa"-moments for me, too. I've studied Henry VIII's reign quite a bit and also been interested in Anne Boleyn's role in his life. So yes, I know exactly what you mean.)

@joa Oh yes I too have studied Henry VIII a bit, I´ve been fascinated by him but I have always been most fascinated by Anne for some reason. Yes I believe Sachsenhausen will do it too, I have never been there but I believe it´s much the same as Auschwitz, Auschwitz of course is the most known and my God that place was huge! Anyway for a very sensitive and intuitive person as I am, it was a horrible. I couldn´t bring myself to go inside those gas chambers, the smell of chemicals was sickening and I felt as if I would be choking, it gave me such chills. I haven´t been in Rome but definitely will have to someday, the most I´ve felt the presense of history was in Egypt, I mean my God those temples, how did they ever build those at that time! I love Egypt, and in those temples there is this feeling of something acient and powerfull being present, almost makes you believe in those ancient Gods are watching :D
