Square Colosseum by joa

Square Colosseum

Not just ancient stuff in our schedule in Rome. There was also a visit to EUR, the part of Rome mostly designed during the fascist era, according to Mussolini's ideals. This is Palazzo della Cività del Lavoro. Or, as it's nicknamed, the "Square Colosseum" (I thought it was more a cube than a square, but what do I know...), a building that is currently owned by the fashion house Fendi and as I understood it, is mostly empty. Impressive in any case - and a photographer's dream&nightmare in one package. A tilt-shift lens was sorely missed on this occasion...

And no, I did not even try to fix all the perspective problems, there were too many. :D
ooooo that's a photo opportunity... I can imagine how this would drive me crazy :-D

What an amazing structure and a really cool shot of it.

Love those repeating patterns.

@janim I had seen a photo of the building in my Lonely Planet guide. From the moment I saw it, I knew I wanted to shoot it. Too bad there were fences all around it, I couldn't get as close as I wanted, or as clean shots as I would've liked to get. Always an ugly bit of fence or something in the way. But yes, you would've gone nuts. :D I got left behind by my group, as I couldn't tear myself away from all the photo opportunities (some of which were impossible to actually make happen). :D
@joeymc It really is a rather stunning building. Modern architecture at its most interesting, I'd say.
@boxplayer If you ever go to Rome, do go see the EUR neighborhood. The patterns on this building alone make it a trip worth your 1,50e metro ticket... ;)

we were only in Rom as a pit stop after being in the Cinque Terre. We had been a week up there, then took the train through Pisa one night and one night/two full days in Rome before we flew to Athens for the second part of our trip. I was able to hit the highlights be not much time for much else
