My nephew and I were driving over to Milton for a photo/picnic trip. On the way we spotted this bird. One neither of us had ever seen before. As near as I can figure this is a female peahen. But I am not certain because I cannot find a picture of one that quite looks like this. Maybe someone will know for sure what it is.
I was going to say it looked like a Mrs. Peacock. Fun to read everybody's commentary and learn I was on the right track. I must confess though the only reason I was on the right track was that I was just photographing at a farm that had them!
It is a peahen that has a condition known as Leucism. Leucism is a condition in which there is partial loss of pigmentation in an animal resulting in white, pale, or patchy coloration of the skin, hair, feathers, scales or cuticle, but not the eyes. Unlike albinism, it is caused by a reduction in multiple types of pigment, not just melanin.
@janiskay Thanks sis, I saw some peahens with white bellies but thought this was unusual. Knew it was because of something. This was over by Fernald shores in Lebanon.
lovely capture :) fav
