I noticed green circles around several trees and wondered why...
Apparently the dark trunk absorbs heat which in turn is absorbed by the snow around the base causing it to melt...
A circle is not the best frame for this photo - it's cropped the tree. The one I posted on instagram is much better........
Lesson - be careful to select or take the right photo when framing in a circle.
