This is a monument built on Troy Hill at Curry Rivel by the British Prime Minister, William Pitt in 1766. It was erected to commemorate William Pynsent who bequeathed Pitt his estate at Curry Rivel because he admired his politics! When he first visited the estate Pitt he said that he proposed to pass the rest of his days there, which is understandable as it is a lovely spot with views across the Somerset Levels.
