Mute swans on the Levels

I think most of us are impressed by the majestic elegance and grace of swans on water or in the air, but on land they look relatively clumsy and quite comical as they waddle around These swans were in a group of around a hundred spread over a couple of fields on the Levels. I'm never quite sure why they choose to gather here but we see them in large numbers every winter in this area.
Fascinating. How much time do they spend out of the water? Standing like that they look a bit like musical notes...

Yes....you're right about the waddling! We have swans in our harbour and they do look comical on land.......although wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of one....they do hissssssss and are bigger than they look.....

They are a very large an awkward bird, not at all built for land travel. It must be a spectacular sight seeing so many at once.

@christophercox - they seem to spend quite a while out of the water, Occasionally some of them get into the King Sedgemoor Drain or one of the rhynes (drainage ditches) for a while . I think they are just supplementing their food with a bit of grazing.

@amfrumbiddivurd - the Levels seem to be one of the migratory stop offs for them

@cutekitty - they are pretty huge close up and can be a little bad tempered. These seem to be much more nervous than resident ones though.

@woofandweft1 @jomo - they do look quite serene when they're not waddling!

@shirleybankfarm - yes it is quite a sight when they are in large numbers
January 15th, 2016
