I always think it seems a little incongruous to see grey herons nesting way up high in trees - they always look a bit awkward with their 2 metre wingspan trying to negotiate flying in and out of the dense treetop environment. This is one of around 200 herons nesting in Swell Wood RSPB nature reserve in Somerset, and this morning there seemed to be a lot of arguments going on between the nesting adults with their nests in such close proximity to each other.. It was probably about 100 feet above me and the chicks (which I couldn't see) were also making an almighty cacophony - presumably trying to encourage her to disgorge some fish into their eager beaks.
