Tuatara...

This is a Tuatara.. A lizard like creature native to NZ. It is actually a Rhynchocephalia ( say that is a hurry). It was nearly extinct but thanks to the Conservation Dept numbers are coming back up.Grows up to 80cm from tip to toe, weighs up to 1.3 Kg's and lives to about 100 years old.. The name Tuatara is Maori for Peaks on Back..
This specimum was at a wildlift park in Rotorua..
Thats an excellent photo of it, Julia! I know how dark these places are for the kiwis and the tuataras!

Fabulous capture. I love this type of creatures. I saw some similar ones in the Galapagos Islands. FAV.

Funny looking little guy...he is a miniature dinosaur!!! So good they are being encouraged to multiply.
