The New Zealand Native Kowhai ( Sophora ) are all in full flower at the moment. They are a hive of industry with the native bird the Tui feeding on the nectar.. This tree is in my Sister's garden and I was hoping to catch some bird action but no today .. so we had to settle with a shot of the blossom on there own .. the leaves come after the flower and then seed pods will hang from the branches..
Although our Kowhai tree was identified by a NZ friend, the flowers are different - longer and don't open out so much. Also the leaves stay on the tree all year. different climate, I suppose.
This is a lovely example of your flowers.
@ethelperry I was surprised yesterday when I took this how far they were open as well .. so this is not usual for our either.. and some of the smaller species seem to retain their leaves..
A very unusual tree that I have never gpheard of but then I never visit NZ at this time of the year...would get short shift as they're too busy! Beautiful fluttery petals!
