TB Testing... by julzmaioro

TB Testing...

Today has been very grey and drizzly as cyclone Debbie is on the way.. but regardless of the weather we still had
have to go ahead with TB Testing of the herd.. this involves giving the cows a 'prick' in the bum and also doing a blood test.. this is done every year and hopefully all comes back clear... my job was to number the test tubes of blood.. and avoid the splattering of poo's..
Like the angle - sounds a dodgy (literally!) job!

Beautiful cows -- a job that must be carried on regardless , so you drew the short straw and was at the messy end !!

At least being dairy cattle they are used to being handled. They look quite relaxed.

A good job done before the worst of the rain arrived. And you even had time to get an image or two as well!

@888rachel She's here now... hope she doesn't cause as much havoc as she did over your way's..

I sure hope Debbie does not do the damage she did here. Also hope you avoided the splatter while doing your job. The cows look so shiny and healthy. Lovely shot.

Lovely ...

Good looking cows, I wonder why you can't get the blood sample from their shoulder? Just to keep away from the rear, smile.

A necessary job I am sure. Sorry Cyclone Debbie is heading your way. We have had lots of rain in her wake.

Sounds like you test for TB differently than we do in the UK. We inject twice in the neck & then three days later come & measure the lumps. If the bottom lump is bigger or they are different sizes the cow is a reactor. Just been asking Harry to remind me what we did & he said your way was far better. Pricking them in the shoulder means they can see you coming & start moving about, in the rear end it's a surprise! Hope they all pass!

@happypat Yep a quick prick under the tail ... doing the blood test this time but don't always do that .. just chosen randomly ... there was a problem in the area a few years back and it was pretty devistating to all .. including us .. after 45 years tb free .. they were blaming ferrel deer.. fingers crossed..

@julzmaioro lots of TB in the UK they blame badgers here! A big problem as if coure you are closed down until a couple of clear tests I think. We were only affected once but it was enough! In the south & Wales they are much more affected. Doing a cull of badgers in certain areas now but it's not popular with some!
