Maori Store house.. by julzmaioro

Maori Store house..

This is the Maori Garden at the Hamilton Gardens... This little building that is raised up on posts is used for food storage to keep safe from rats etc. In the top picture is the gardens ready to be planted with Kumera ( sweet Potato) in the bottom corner a traditional Maori carving..
So neat the way the earth is prepared for planting - and neat carving on the storehouse.

It's interesting. There are examples of similar solutions for grain storage from medieval England and 18th Century northern Spain that I have seen.

We had kumera chips tonight, delicious they were too! They wouldn't be long in that food store!

@happypat they are yummy.
We're they hot chips or the dried packet sort... both good.. kumera are pretty expensive this year as a terrible season for the growers..

Mmm, sweet potato is one of my very favourite vegies. I heard on the news this morning that NZ had a shortage of spuds thanks to too much rain, didn't dawn on me that included sweet potatoes too. That combination's serious.

@golftragic My sister in NZ says they are going to have a shortage of chips. I can't imagine it!

@golftragic @888rachel yes terrible state of affairs... we live near the main potato growing area and the fields have been really wet...

@julzmaioro Oh gosh, spuds are such a basic part of so many meals.
