Last night we had 'The Storm From Hell'.. we had winds that have been reported to have reached 213kmh just a little short of the strongest wind in the area.. Our power went out at around 10pm last night and then at 12am we got a phone call to say the Milk Tanker could not get up the drive as a tree had fallen across it.. So Farmer George had to get out of bed to go and shift it.. Day light dawned and we had hay shed doors off more trees down and old shed flattened, and a favourite pohutukawa tree ripped from the ground http://365project.org/julzmaioro/365/2016-12-30 here is a shot of it in it's prime.. Of course as the power is off we can not milk the cows and this shot was taken when Farmer George went out to survey the situation and the 'Girls' were calling out to him as they knew it was well past milking time ... We were told that the power could be off for 24 to 48 hours but thankfully it was back on again after 18... The Girls were very keen to get to the shed to be milked ..
@ellida We are very lucky to have our power back on ... Our neighbours still have not and they have invested in a $6,000 generater... they milk more cows that us ... so probably a worth while investment..
It sure was a ripper. My husband was on a flight back to Auckland from Wellington. Delayed anyway, then when they arrived in Auckland they'd just closed the runway. They were sent back to Wellington, but it was too windy to land there too. Ended up spending the night in Christchurch. Eventually got home 20 hours later than planned
Best scamper up to that shed and retrieve the pot of gold. Yes, a very rough night and a pity to loose that lovely pohutukawa. The cows would have been very pleased to get milked by this afternoon. Fav for this neat lighting and rainbow.
What a terrible storm, so sorry for all the damage and especially the loss of that lovely tree. This capture is beautiful and deceiving as everything looks fine.
Wow, what a night you had. We bought a generator a couple of years ago because in previous years we experienced two sub tropical cyclones and lost power for 4 days both times.
I bet the girls were relieved to be milked.
I think you can see just where the end of the rainbow is in this shot quite so I would start digging for the pot of gold if I were you.
A really rough night for you all Julz! It's amazing how a wind can do so much damage. I can just imagine how Farmer George felt when he had to get up, I bet you were both listening to it battering everywhere anyway! Thank goodness it wasn't too long before the electric came on. You would be glad this happened late in the milking year & not at full new calved production! . We used to have a generator as it was quite a common occurrence listing the electricity supply, the tractor drove it using a belt.
Sad about the trees & the damage. Messaged DIL in Morrinsville but she didn't mention damage but that it was cold.
What a dreadful night and so worrying for you loosing your electricity when the girls needed milking. So sad about your tree. Not a think you can replace
@happypat yes not long before the girls are dried off but our neighbours who milk right through have newly calved cows went and bought a generater.. we use to have one but things got changed and couldnt use it any more.. perhaps we may have to rethink that.. seem to be the West coast that got hit the worst.. and reported we could get it again today... 🤤
@jgpittenger They should be ok as it is end of season and will be drying off soon ... If it went too much longe we would of dried them off.. sounds like you know something about this farming caper..
Lovely photo, certainly looks like the calm after the storm. Hope there's no more rough weather in store for you. It was windy here too (Tauranga) but nothing like Auckland, and no damage that I'm aware of.
I bet the girls were relieved to be milked.
