Moody Man 2 ? by jyokota

Moody Man 2 ?

Attempt #2 for my "get pushed" challenge of the week. @mwac challenged me to post a "moody b&w".

This Chinese statue belonged to my grandfather and sat in his garden in Shanghai for years. He took it to Tokyo in the mid-1950s, and eventually ended up in Chicago with me in about 2000. He's always had a stern look about him. His posture is imposing, and his face in deep concentration. I used a "blue filter" to turn a color image into black and white because it had the least contrast and seemed to add to the "moody" look I was after.

thoughts?
I love this!

I need to get my challenge done ASAP

A perfect shot for the challenge! It makes me want to do a 'get pushed' challenge.

@mwac -- thanks -- I posted one yesterday as well. I may try another before the week is over. I like how having a new challenge makes you consider how to capture things through someone else's thinking . . .
@taffy -- I recommend it highly! This is my first one but I know I want to do it again. @mwac gave me a challenge of something I typically don't think of photographing, and I enjoyed looking through her album and being introduced to her work.

VERY moody! Again, you inspire me to try something new to me. B&W...... I have been doing some remodeling -- bare bones of room might be interesting!

The noise is what does it for me - yummy. If I could make a suggestion to really flesh out the things you mentioned, the imposing look and the moodiness, would you consider photographing the statue from a lower, slightly closer, point of view? I think if he were looming over us he could hardly be anything but moody. In any case, I love your choice of subject, and your processing is lovely. Thanks for posting.

@carolb -- The only time I processed into b&w was wen I couldn't get the skin coloring right for a friend's wedding photo I had taken, and then, I did it as a way of saving an image. Only since 365 (all of a month+ ago) have I been trying out b&w. My "get-pushed" partner suggested a b&w "moody" photo. Your remodeling bare bones room sounds like just the right image to try out!

@spirrowshoot -- thanks thanks thanks! What a great suggestion. I just spent time trying it out, but not ready to post yet. I want to try it again in better lighting. I hadn't even thought it going lower and closer but indeed, he would be looming over the viewer!
