I bought it the first day I arrived in Munich. The color appealed to me. Nearly two weeks later, the leaves are growing so nicely I may just have to keep this as decoration for my quite empty temporary flat rather than eating it.
@vera365 -- from the bio market, Basic. My favorite shop other than Vikualienmarkt. @gamelee - This vegetable always reminds me of Germany because I don't eat it anywhere else. I suppose I should eat it -- after all, it's a vegetable, but I've grown accustomed to seeing it sitting on my window sill.
Never heard of this vegetable Junko but it makes such an attractive display maybe leave it and see if it changes. Could be another photo opportunity! Love the light through the leaves and the very pretty bokeh! Fav!
@jamibann -- yes, in Munich for nearly two months. But I'm still playing catchup with Australia. I had an accident in Buenos Aires and was off of 365 for a few weeks . . . and also ended up with ZERO photos of Argentina (except in the emergency room!).
Love the taste of that but I have to say the photographic potential was worth the edible sacrifice!
Sounds like you had a few adventures........emergency room doesn't sound good!! Hope you are okay.
@casablanca -- thanks for your comment and your concern! I ended up wearing a "boot" for awhile, and clomping around. And frankly, it was is supportive that I didn't feel nearly as much pain as I do now. But my ankle was getting stiff and my back was feeling the variation in height of my two legs so I'm doing my best now with hiking boots. I wonder if I should go to a doctor here in Germany?
I had one of those for a while after I broke my ankle. I went to see a Physiotherapist and asked them for stretches and exercises to ease my stiff ankle and my lower back. I found that really helpful. Maybe you could check out if there is a useful Physiotherapist near you in Munich? Smiled when I saw you were there - I know it well and my cousin lives and works there! I do heartily wish you well.
@jyokota I actually grew up just eating them raw. Kind of like a raw potato, more of a taste between a turnip and cabbage. My dad used to cut them up and we would eat them, that and also raw potatoes and cabbage. Different right?
@casablanca -- I have been coming to Munich every year for ten years -- anywhere from 2 weeks to 5 months at a time! Perhaps we can photowalk in Munich together some day! Tonight, I am going to a photo meet-up with the local photo group here. We are going to Kochelsee to photograph the meteor shower!
@taffy - trying to post the occasional current photo that's not too confusing as a location while finishing Australia in July. Still limping around Munich without my camera. Ankle is super slow to heal.
@laurieewilson -- do you think that the longer I leave it (and the leaves grow increasingly interestingly) the less water the vegetable portion holds? It's starting to look different in shape and I wonder if the leaves suck out the water?
@jamibann -- thanks for the sympathy. I was super sad about Argentina because I had booked a photo guide as well as a walk with a photo book illustrator, and I had carried my arsenal of lenses and even my heavy tripod - and ended up with ZERO photos. Oh, well. I did my work well so have already been told I will be invited back next year.
I'm really stunned not only by the picture but by how many people don't know Kohlrabi. I also just now learned that it's also kohlrabi in English, very funny. When I was a child, my parents and grandparents cooked them regularly as a side dish and I didn't like them very much (I like them raw). But I loved the cooked leaves! They are really delicious, you shoud try them!
Sounds like you had a few adventures........emergency room doesn't sound good!! Hope you are okay.
