The Flour Arrived! (and yes, Danbos are socially distanced)
So as I have been lamenting, there's been no flour to purchase in stores, online, anywhere! I have a somewhat obsessive personality so once I decided to believe my friend who recalls I used to bake bread more than 30 years ago, I HAD TO HAVE FLOUR. Now, to figure out what to do with it. Relying on @stephomy for professional guidance. And who's worried when CJ @cjphoto makes a guest appearance and says, "Not to worry -- I have my chef's hat AND my camera so we can bake and photograph!" Danbos are all wondering how they escaped @taffy and @jborrases 30-day project -- maybe those trucks brought them here? @taffy I made use of six of the (did you say 30?) cutting boards in our kitchen to stage this!
I've been making a recipe called Amish Bread from allrecipes.com. Slightly sweet, like a Hawaiian bread, makes a wonderful two loaves. Other than yeast, it's all ingredients a person has on hand. It will be fun to see what you make! Yum....
@featherstone26 -- at present, there's no yeast to be purchased either, and I only have three packets. You'd be surprised how I don't have the "ingredients a person has on hand." My husband did all the cooking and baking so I'm not even familiar with the pantry here but I have no butter, no oil (except olive oil), and I had no flour except rice flour until today.
Haha. This picture reminds me a Star trek TNG episode: fistful of datas.
Here, people were obsesed to bought toilette paper before being confined, now it is flour and baking powder. I thought that social media, influencers and more are behind a weird plot ;).
I’ll look your final results baking bread. A healthy idea
@30pics4jackiesdiamond yes, several years ago, but this recipe has been coming to the fore now because some people couldnt find yeast, i remember it being yummy, i should start some myself, although i do have yeast atm
@30pics4jackiesdiamond the bug can take a couple of days, which it doesnt mention in this recipe, you can also keep some back and feed it up with sugar, flour and lukewarm potato water just like sourdough starter.
@louannwarren -- clearly, that's what my husband thought, too, that cutting boards were so necessary we have an entire (skinny) cabinet with three shelves dedicated to cutting boards, cookie sheets, and sheet pans. Taffy said she thought he had 30 (from the days when she and her husband lived with us) but I have given away some and I haven't counted.
Edit: I just counted. There's only 23 after I gave a few away, and that includes those Prep Boards that technically you can cut on but he would need have cut on because that would have scratched them.
This gave me the biggest smile. Didn't know CJ took a trip to see you. Maybe that's where he was going while hanging on to the airplane in my photo the other day. :D :D :D
Wow, that's a lotta flour. I'm sure with some ingenuity you'll find out a way to make something with them all.
@jyokota sounds like still just the best collection. I showed some of my boards to my son and gave him the history behind them, they are family treasures.
@houser934@kali66@30pics4jackiesdiamond -- I've just been gifted SIX packets of yeast! :) But I still have a lot of flour so I might see if I can figure out this started business.
As someone who used to handle bread on a regular routine, I think you have a bit too much. Perhaps some neighbors could have a swap with you for other essentials? Good luck. Flour has a shelf life and if you can figure out a good regimen, you can bake and bake and bake. Might I suggest you make some pastry for quiches and galettes. No yeast needed. You can freeze them and pull them out later
@cjphoto -- I even put blue pants on him because I knew you would have matched him to his scene. I was going to turn him around to face the flour and Danbos as if he was taking their photo -- but !!!!! did you know that CJ has TWO faces on his head???
@darylo -- I froze four, put two in my pantry, put two aside for my daughter, and four to give away to neighbors. They're two pound bags so not as much as it looks like -- less than five regular bags of flour. And yes, recipes appreciated! Maybe even guided lessons over zoom!
@julzmaioro -- I thought those were make-believe things that you hear in nursery rhymes until I moved to Iowa and found that they were REAL! Haven't seen them since I moved to Illinois, though.
@jyokota Whaaaaat??? No hot-cross buns??? I'll have to go to see @julzmairo instead. I'm looking forward to hearing the next gripping episode in the bread-making saga.
@stephomy I'll try that Challah recipe you sent after I get some oil. I ordered it from Thrive Market about two weeks ago. Meanwhile, what are quick breads that don't use yeast?
@golftragic -- If @julzmairo has hot cross buns we should all go to her place to have some. I hope someone posts photos of them.
@lyndamcg -- I was unable get yeast but someone dropped of 6 packets for me today so I'm set for awhile!
@ludwigsdiana -- at least you've been warned that it's challenging to bake bread! Stay tuned -- perhaps there will be some success at some point. Meanwhile, post your photos if you do bake some.
@loweygrace -- I'm still waiting on a backorder from King Arthur, too, but not for bread flour. I just went on eBay (thanks for tip) and bid on some yeast. Who knew one could and would bid on baking yeast!
Awesome! How fast it changes. There is no shortage of bread in Poland. There are queues but it is because of the social distance. I eat little bread, and I have supply WASA bread for hard times.
@gilbertwood@merrelyn@leonbuys83@haskar@summerfield -- thank you for your comments. I couldn't setting them up and playing with them because when else in my life will I have 12 bags of flour at once!? I just baked with it today -- results to be uploaded!
@jyokota One of the last things I baked for work before the big shut down was Irish soda bread for St. Patrick's day. My all time favorite quick bread to bake is banana bread.
200g flour 200g water 6 raisins
Mix and leave 24 hours, add 200g each flour and water leave 24/48 hours.
Make sure bubbling, throw away half or more ( I know seems a waste but that's the recipe,!)
Feed with flour and water, leave for a day and it's there for life to use,

@kali66 -- a bug ???
Oh, my, I'm in need of more specifics.
Edit: I just counted. There's only 23 after I gave a few away, and that includes those Prep Boards that technically you can cut on but he would need have cut on because that would have scratched them.

I think this way worked very well. CJ always finds a way to make things work. :)
There's always quick breads to bake while you wait for some yeast.
