O fortuna by kali66

O fortuna

I caught my 18 year old listening to Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, on youtube.
I have no idea how he came across the music or that he was inclined to listen to anything like that, so I was impressed! must be the ulitmate in teenage rebellion lol

I sought a translation of the most famous segment, O Fortuna and it impressed me even more... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXFSK0ogeg4

O Fortune,
like the moon you are changeable, always waxing or waning;
hateful life first oppresses and then soothes as fancy takes it;
poverty and power it melts them like ice

Fate – monstrous and empty,
you whirling wheel, stand malevolent,
well-being is vain and always fades to nothing,
shadowed and veiled you plague me too;
now through trickery, my back is bare to your villainy.

Fate, in health and in virtue, is against me,
driven on and weighted down, always enslaved.
So at this hour without delay pluck the vibrating string;
since Fate strikes down the strong man,
everyone weep with me!

A fantastic shot!!

I sang the Carmina Burana in a choir (amateur) with professional solo artists and orkestra as a student. Oh Fortuna still brings shivers down my spine.

When my now 17-yr-old was in 4th grade, we went to some school event one evening. There was a brief video presentation. During the opening strains of music, he loudly announced that Beethoven was one of his favorite composers along with Mozart, Bach, and Hayden. Other parents were enormously impressed. My son thought everyone listened to classical music on Sundays and had occasional opera days during which no one speaks but, rather, sings conversation. Discovering otherwise was an enormous blow for one so young! ;)

Your son has good taste in music! I love the image to go with it!

@kali66 I am very familiar with the music - sometimes I just do not remember names and titles - such an idiot lol

@annied same, I mean that music is kind of instantly recognisable because it is used in movies and ads...but the name of it I couldn't have told you until last night. And there is all sorts of bits in between when you view the whole shebang

@madchickenwoman2 I can remember of doing similar to music when at primary school, somehow embedded in the memory banks

I love that song, it has such power. They actually play it before some basketball games here. This is a beautiful image of the sun.

My eldest daughter is a classical musician, and just your title started the oboe part of this running through my head.
