Oh, Kathy. I think this is the Emerald Ash Borer. It is hard to tell in your picture whether it is long and fairly thin, because it looks short and squat in your picture. But, it is a very invasive bug that is killing our Ash trees, and nothing known can stop it. It is not native to North America. Very pretty bug, but deadly.
@farmreporter Ok, You made me look this little guy up! He is not the Emerald Ash Borer thank goodness. He is a Dogbane Beetle. They eat only Dogbane leaves and do not bother any other plant. They have a short life. So it seems they are beautiful and not pesky. So now I will edit my photo. Thanks for taking an interest!
Thank goodness! Our hardwood forests are taking a real hit lately with Dutch Elm disease, Butternut canker, and now the Emerald Ash Borer.
So sorry to give you a scare.
@farmreporter It is difficult to watch a destructive insect destroy beautiful vegetation. I really appreciate you motivating me to learn about this little bettle.
