Look close but don't be scared

This is a black snake we call Leroy. We think he has lived here for at least 10 years. He accidentally was wounded by a weed eater. This is how we identify him. He is long maybe 4 feet. He hangs out under our bird feeders and eats mice and I think they eat poisonous snakes. We like him but only want one to live here not a family.
Great shot good catch

Wonderful shot! He (or she) is a very handsome beast and if they keep the pests down then that has to be a good thing.

Beautiful snake and great capture. Glad he's able to live unmolested (except by random weedeaters)! Great photo.

Kathy, what a great shot of your snake friend. We have little garden snakes that my husband names... I haven't seen one in a while but he is sure he knows them by name when he sees them.

Oh my... tonight when I was leaving my house to have dinner with some friends there was a similar one on my driveway... not a fun thing for me to see.

@anazad511 Ana, I understand snakes are shocking when surprised by them. We do like Leroy to stay away from our main walking path.

I don't like to be startled by a black snake, and I really don't want them to eat my baby birds or frogs, or get too close to the house, but they are ok at a distance. I have seen a 4 blacksnake a couple of times while I've been out mowing but I just stopped and let it pass. Hope you were able to get this photo without getting too close... like the way you caught him peeking through the grass!

fantastic image - I love snakes and would love to come across one in the wild - preferably the non-venomous kind like this guy - well captured

Well, hello Leroy. Very nice to meet you. I hope you have gotten better at watching out for (and dodging) weed eaters! Ouch. :-(

It's so nice that you have welcomed this garden resident. I love this shot of him peeking at you through the grass. I like snakes and Leroy is cute. :-)
