Ginkgo

My dad has these two ginkgo seedlings out on his balcony. They're doing well!
Cool picture.

Wow, how good is that. I hope he has a nice big garden to plant them in. Ginkgo tea is supposed to be good for the memory.

these leaves are such a cool shape... it would be fun to see them in isolation, they are like butterfly wings.

Great looking specimens. Did you know the ones growing near Hiroshima not only survived the atomic bomb blast but are now thriving! They are very ancient and fascinating trees.

@salza they are very ancient and belong in a class all of their own. They count as conifers but are different to all of them. They were thought to have died out but some were found growing in an isolated valley in China. They are very resistant to pollution and are used as street trees. They resist very high levels of atomic radiation too. The male trees (I think) are avoided because they give off a horrible smell when flowering. They have wide medicinal use as well in the Far East. A strange and intrepid survivor!

@whippeteer thanks for the info Frances. I do that Ginkgo has many medicinal uses but I had never researched them as plants. I will make an effort to look them up. Plus I shall try to find out whether they grow or are available in South Africa.
