When he was young; on about 6 or so, there was a hole in the yard, about 4 feet in diameter, where our septic cover was, as work was being done. Stay with me here :)
One night as I was washing dishes after dinner, I looked out of the window over the sink, into the yard and watched as this small child approached the hole. He looked to be sizing it up and talking to himself. Shortly, he took several steps away from the hole and broke into a great run towards it. As I continued to watch, he jumped with all of his might and landed smack in the hole on the cement cover down about 2 feet. He climbed out of the hole and repeated this effort several times, each time brushing himself off and moving back to his starting point in a constant monologue. Finally, long after I had completed the dishes and, now, just watching this small child, he ran and leapt with everything in him and cleared the hole!
I was amazed! But he, having completed the task at hand, did not raise his arms in victory. He simply moved on to his next adventure.
He is no longer a small child. I hesitate now to even call him a Fine Young Man, as was my goal for him, whispered each night after stories and prayers. He is a Good Person. And I am proud. And when I share with him my feelings of pride or compliment his self inspired goodness, he responds, as he did with his hole victory, "Whatever".
He is not impressed with his accomplishments, he moves on to the next challenge.
I really like this guy.
Simply beautiful and loving words for your son. He hears your words...they touch his soul...and you know that... Had he not, he wouldn't have responded, however modestly...
you helped get him here - to this point as this person - shaping with your truths and your guidance and your love
An Amazing young boy and a heartfelt sharing.
