In 1918, the Commonwealth of Virginia designated the American Dogwood, also called the Flowering Dogwood, as both the state tree and the state flower. The blossoms opened up today and are still a little green in coloration. They will eventually become a bright white color. We had rain all day today, followed by sleet and a little snow. I hope the flowers survive the cold tonight.
*sigh* I miss these trees. I lived so many years in the Fairfax area with these growing everywhere, but they don't grow in my part of Indiana. I never get to see them anymore so I love seeing your photo.
@deborahortiz Thanks, Debbie. These are native to Virginia and grow all over the state. At this time of year it's great to see them in bloom even in hidden away places in the forests.
