Frankie drop in by koalagardens

Frankie drop in

The joey's born last year really dispersed but it sure has been good to see two this week that I hadn't seen in a while. Notice the great koala scratch marks on this branch!
They are all around the same age, but oddly enough Frankie was spotted about as far away on the other end of the property as possible from Phoenix who I posted yesterday.
Thank you for the awesome questions and comments on my photos.
Adorable! I marvel that you can identify them all! I'd have to have a photographic cheat-sheet in my hand!

Do they know do you think that Koala Gardens is their 'home' territory?

May I make a suggestion that I've been meaning to make for some time - could you tag each image with the koala's name to help people like me and @Weezilou identify them?

@Weezilou well of course I often have to sit and trawl through my file of 70 or noses I've seen over the years. but I have photographed Frankie several hundred times so I knew him as soon as I got zoomed in :) some are not so easy!

@vignouse great question Richard. Koalas are very territorial and each koala has their own 'home range'. They also have their own 'home trees' inside that range.
However, it takes time for a koala to find a place within a colony and sort out a home range. Frankie began in mum's home range, then after they separated he used a small home range area, and then slowly expanded that over time.
Once winter begins to end, it triggers the younger koalas to head out and disperse to make their own way and find their own true home range that will be theirs in adulthood.
Sometimes it is quite close by, but other times they may have to hunt afar.
Once they settled into a home range as an adult, I doubt they would really hold any particular memory of the home range they were born into. Who knows how animals think, but I suspect they would pretty much 'forget'.

I think tagging the koala images is a great idea! thanks for suggesting it :)

@vignouse I've tagged the last month of koalas - if I can I'll work backwards a bit whenever I get a bit of a chance so there are at least a few for each koala :) I'll tag them always going forwards, wish I'd been doing that the past 5 years here!
