I think Hugo spies you too. Now his nose looks rather unmarked except for that little line at the top. DoI r3meber right that you id3ntify them mostly from their noses?
@gardencat indeed I do. His pattern though is rather distinctive - if you look at the pink inside his nostrils and the lovely ragged pattern at the base of the pink on each side it makes him very easy to identify :) Look back at some photos of summer and you will see he only has pink inside the nostrils too, but the amount and the patterning of it is very different to Hugo here. Thanks for noticing this!
I was interested to read your response to gardencat - I was also thinking about his nose pattern and how plain it was - i didn't realize that it included so much detail about the pattern inside his nostrils. This little fellow is just so untouched - is he only a youngster?
@shutterbug49 hahaha me climbing a tree is so funny a thought! Sitting on the quad bike and on a hill I was able to get an angle more 'front on' than many of them are :)
@robz he is mature - I can tell as he looks around 7-8kg and has a pretty good hefty scent gland. So he is at least 3 years old, but after that one need to check the wear on their molars and that takes an anaesthetic :)
Fabulous close up of this gorgeous face peering out, fav! Does you Canon allow you to shoot in RAW and still have the same zoom distance? Mine unfortunately not ;-(
@ludwigsdiana when I choose to shoot in raw I believe I still have the same optical zoom, but I don't have the bit extra digital zoom. I never used to go into the digital zoom as I found it decreased the quality too much anyway.
@koalagardens I see now that there are marks but to my eyes they are subtle. You must have sharp eyes to pick them out. I think I might just manage to identify Tucker. Going back through the last few weeks photos has been fun. I realize that the days I missed posting I also missed some great Koala captures.
@stevepam you've hit the nail on the head! the word is they will be extinct by 2050 because their habitat is being destroyed at such a high rate. They can only feed on certain trees, so once they are gone ...
@gardencat I have a file of every nose that has been here and I admit some days it takes some time trawling through to compare nose patterns when I think I have a new koala here :)
