the dispersion typically begins in July, and ta da, on the first day, I find a sub-adult little boy just inside a property boundary. last year, I found one around the same size on June 30, he was obviously getting an early start haha.
Koala Dispersion time - new joeys are coming out of pouches and young from the previous year that are maturing a little past juvenile begin to move out to find their own home range. If you think about it, young can't all stay in the home range they were born in or colonies would become inbred, so this ensures genetic diversity which is critical to koala health and why we fight so hard here to keep habitat connected.
@onewing that's why so many get hit by cars between July and December, then things slow down again as the dispersion is over and most of the females have tiny joey's in pouch and the big breeding males stop chasing everyone
@dutchothotmailcom@gardencat@craftymeg I wouldn't say he is really scared, but he is certainly looking at me like 'who are you?' as I was having to work hard to get a clear photo of his face to identify him.
It's really hard to find somewhere to settle, particularly for the young males with habitat disappearing so fast. they do have to navigate the older males, as well as they now have to navigate houses, roads, dog etc.
Awww- he looks a little shell-shocked to me but maybe it's just he's never seen a camera before too. Welcome to Wild and Free little guy- it's a great place to live!
