It was 62 years ago this September that as a petrified child I was dragged through this door for the start of my schooling. I didn't want to go and didn't really enjoy the next 12 years of education, even though I made many friends and did OK.
So now as a pensioner I stopped off to collect these photo memories of Stonehouse Primary School 2014, the entry door, the school bell and the playground. The stupid thing is that I have travelled around the world for work, lived and trained in Scotland, but I still live now just 1 mile from this, my first school. MEMORIES.
Lovely collage (the school bell capture is particularly beautiful) and story. My sister was exactly like that - couldn't wait to finish her education and start working. I, on the other hand, loved my school days.
It does look somewhat formidable! Love the story you shared. I'm like you - in that I've lived within a 5 mile radius of where I was born for my entire life. It felt like we were touring a bit of heaven when we visited the Cotswolds (and so excited to go back this fall!), but there is something magical about 'home'.
Wonderful Heather! Although I must say, it does look formidable. Love the accompanying narrative...the draw back to our roots can be a very strong one.
I loved school when I first started as I used to creep into our village school at the age of 3. In the end they decided to let me start as they couldn't keep me away. However, by the age of 11 when I went to what was a Grammar School, I hated it as I had gone from a village school of 50 to a huge school of 1,050. My first school has now been pulled down! I had happy memories there. Lovely collage
Oh what memories! It's great to see the old school hasn't lost it's character. Love your childhood story too.....and the fact you've ended up back there :) My sister and I are planning to go back to our home town in November. None of our family are there any more. Will be interesting!
A beautiful building in which to have attended school. Perhaps it was too much like a castle from your youthful perspective and it was daunting. I like your collage and it shows you've been able to see the school anew in these photos.
@kathiecb@khawbecker Thank you ladies for your comments and yes Kathie, that lawn in the center was the caretakers garden, it used to look huge, and that door looked twice the size.
My old primary school no longer exists, knocked down and a care home in its place, the church too. The church was a timber building but I remember it with fonder memories than the school. I disliked school immensely. I like the shot of the bell tower the best
