This is a very old house that has gone through many changes, in fact all the clues are in the picture. Dates from around 1790 and was originally one house. To the right there was obviously an open arch, now filled in but the red arch stone are there.
Look above the arch and you can see some larger edging stones, that was the end of the house. The front door must have been wider as the left side of the door has been filled in, where the original door would have been equally spaced between the windows.
So today it seems to be two houses and you can see the dividing line by the roof tiles. The left hand one has 3 window and a door, whilst the right has filled in the arch and added the door. Then it's added to the building to the right. Note the round disk above the right window, this is a metal strap that goes right through the building under the bedroom floorboards and stops the two outer wall falling apart.
Just goes to show that if you stop and study old buildings you can see more than expected.
What a wonderful historic building. I love hearing about the history of it. I really should get out and explore my area although I know I won't see anything so grand. Thanks for sharing!
what a great find - enjoyed your commentary too :) I love old buildings and always wish I could just knock on the door and ask the inhabitants to see what they are like inside.
