How things have changed over the years from the days when I was "knee high to a grass hopper", in English, a tiny kid. Then we used to go out in the morning and never returned home until it was getting dark. There was no health and safety, we swung from from old ropes above ponds and walked the streets without dangers of strange people attacking you. We climbed quarries and roamed in woods miles from home.
In fact this is Doverow Hill and the town I lived in was just off to the left. As youngsters this was our playground and we spent hours running around the woods on top where there was also a disused quarry. Yes I played cowboys and Indians, being shot and rolling down banks. We didn't have a care in the world, and our parents had no worries about injuries, and if there was a sticky plaster and magic spit solved the problems.
Today the children have to be put in cotton wool, chaperoned everywhere and spend most of the day on the play-station or PC, what happened to marbles or knocking up a trolley from apple boxes and old pram wheels and roaring down the road with no brakes.
DREAMS, it's all DREAMS these days, says Lady Magpie glued to the PC all day.
I had a wonderful childhood just like you and this brought back memories, catching minnows in the streams, looking for birds nests, etc. lovely shot and a fav
What a wonderful place that would have been to play! My mother used to give us a bagged lunch and told us to go out and play and don't return to dinner time. If she had known what we were up to half the time she would probably have had a heart attack. But we survived.
Had my grandson the other day, it was 'I'm bored" every ten minutes. Finally sent him out in the yard and told him not to come in until he had found twenty different stones and five different kinds of leaves. He had a blast.
This is such a pretty shot, makes me long to 'play' there ;-)
A beautiful capture and such true words. How interesting that it was the very same for my childhood although your play area was much larger and more lovely than my neighborhood. A wonderful memory of days long long ago. Fav.
My hubby (38) remembers his childhood being as you described. Hours spent up the woods playing. He also remarks that no kiddies are at the park or up the woods when we go out. Technology has a part to play in my kids lives but so do the woods that surround our village. At 2 and 5 too little to be out alone. They love being out in the woods and I hope they continue to do so..... I'm a harsh mum, they fall they pick themselves up dust themselves down and off they go.....apart from if it's serious and I'll give them a big magic kiss.
Beautiful place and great memories. I know what you mean about the childhood. Same here, we use to ride our bikes all day and be home before the street lights came on. The kids are so tied down now because of all the mean people in the world. But I still have mine play checkers and some of the old games.
Memories of our free childhood are so precious! We had the factory whistle at midday and 5.30 which was our signal to head home for lunch and dinner! Great shot :)
