Things that go Bump in the Night

Following on from my sad stories of people being forced into the workhouse, here are more pictures of the grey and chilling buildings that housed all those poor people. Ignore all the doors on the ground floor as these have been added to make several of the ground apartments.

So many people died in this vast buildings, men, women, small children and babies that today it's said to be haunted by many of the past souls. I spent a lot of time here visit a friend who had one of the apartments on the top floor.

Late one evening we were waiting for my friends husband to come home from work, he was on a late shift as a bus driver. I thought I heard the front door close and his footsteps could be heard loudly coming along the hall to the lounge. We both turned to the door to see her husband come in but nothing happened so she went and opened the door but nobody was there.

We were both keen CB Radio users in the 80's and that is how we became friends, On one occasion her husband was putting a new CB aerial in the loft but as he climbed up he could hear a crying baby coming from the darkness. He shot out of the loft as white as a sheet and never ever went back up there, as a matter of interest there were no babies in apartments near to them.

So there you go, do you believe in ghosts and would go into this building. I didn't believe before but I do know. Thank you for reading and for all your comments and FAV's
One would have to have a certain mindset to live there, I suppose.

Ever been to Southwell workhouse? With the national trust? We went about 10 years ago and it was very poignant.

Nicely captured! If any building was destined to be haunted, it's this one. Very chilling examples!

I don't think that I could continue to live there after an experience like that.

Nice collage and interesting stories. Perhaps I could be brave enough to visit but I don't think I'd park there

My brother has written a history of the workhouse. "Stroud Work House - a Danger to Sick People"

I think you would have to be quite a detached sort of person to live in such a place. My husband for instance only lives in the present & has no interest in the last so he would be fine! I expect it's made very nice apartments!

Nice collage; I don't believe in ghosts, but I wouldn't like to live in a house like this.

Interesting collage. Whether you believe or not it would still be rather a creepy place to live. My imagination would run wild.

That's a great building shot. It definitely has a Victorian Workhouse look about it.
