I'm about to make an announcement, hope you're ready for this, "I am a Spoon Nerd", there you are I've admitted it. I have books on spoons and another book on the history of spoons; in fact I have spoons almost coming out of my ears.
The weird thing is I sometime run out of spoons in my kitchen draws, and have to dive into the dishwasher to find one. I will not touch one from my collection as they are special. There is nothing worse than not having spoons in your draws (Wink)
Now yesterday I accidently pressed a button on my PC whilst logged onto my local auction house, well that's my excuse. I had purchased a beautiful very large tablespoon. It actually dates for 1778 and was made by the famous London silversmith Hester Bateman (1708-1794). I've put 2 x 1896 teaspoons beside it to show how big it is. I did go and collect it straight away.
I have suggested that I might be suffering from spoonerism, but of course that is something very different. Someone who is suffering with this will keep mixer their words, sad but can be very funny. Examples are:
A lack of pies (A pack of lies)
It's roaring with pain (It's pouring with rain)
Wave the sails (Save the whales)
So if I said to you, "I haven't got a cat flap", I meant I haven't got a flat cap as you all know I have a cowboy hat.
Enough of that, what really is going through my head is how many people have handled this tablespoon in the past 243 years.
A beautifully presentation of your spoons and a lovely addition to your collection ! I am sure you would get more than four teaspoons to that big tablespoon ! ( food measurements in cooking !! )
@monikozi I know were the geocache is at the Turnul Pielarilor, always read the last few logs on the site and more importantly look to see the view the gallery page just before the logs, it sometimes help.
You’re right about never having enough teaspoons in the drawer, if you drink a lot of tea you can use lots….
This is a very fine spoon & as you say that spoon can tell a story if it could talk, for instance who is or were T&A?
@gilbertwood Not quite but I remember when I was very small and my Mum was bathing me. I said a naughty word and within seconds I had a bar of soap in my mouth, never did that again.
I have been once to a Museum of Wooden Spoons. Quite a sight.
